Portable AIV biosensor developed

US researchers have developed a portable biosensor that rapidly screens for the H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus with specific results in less than 30 minutes. The team, from the University of Arkansas's agriculture division, says that the device sensitively detects H5N1 from poultry cloacal or tracheal swab, and that as a commercial product it would likely sell for under $8,000, with testing fees of less than $10 per sample.
