US researchers seeking foothill abortion vaccine

Researchers at the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) have identified a bacterium they believe may be the cause of epizootic bovine abortion, also known as foothill abortion, and they hope the discovery will lead a vaccine to prevent it. The bacterial disease is transmitted by the pajaroello tick, a soft-shelled tick common in the US and particularly in California, where cattle producers lose an estimated 45,000 to 90,000 calves per year at a cost of $6.3m.
