Ghana reports first case of AI (avian influenza):
An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has occurred in Ghana for the time, reports the country. Almost 450 birds on a farm in Kakasunanka, in Greater Accra, died of the type A virus, and another 1,944 were destroyed. The source of the infection is unknown, but samples have been sent to the world organization for animal health, the OIE, reference laboratory in Padua, Italy; results are pending. The control measures that have been applied so far include movement control inside the country, disinfection of infected premises, quarantine and modified stamping out. Zoning is to be applied, and vaccination has been prohibited.
