Horse population declines in Japan:

The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (JMAFF) has reported that the horse population in Japan declined in 2005 by almost 4% to 92,886, according to latest figures released by the ministry. The largest fall was among agricultural horses, the category fell by 12% to 11,951. Native breeds, ponies and race horses also registered declines, of 9% to 2,087, 7.2% to 1,486 and 4.9% to 50,411 respectively. However, the number of riding horses rose by 5.9% to 14,512, while that of fattening meat horses was flat.
