Equine influenza in southern hemisphere
Outbreaks of equine influenza have recently been reported in Australia and Japan. In Australia, 10 cases of the virus have occurred across the entire country since August 24th, and more than 500 animals may have been exposed to the virus. The authorities say that most of the infected premises have been linked to a two-day horse event held near Maitland, New South Wales, on August 18th-19th. In addition, some horses in greater Sydney have tested positive for equine influenza A H3, and tests are under way to see if links exist with a quarantine station there.
