Livestock movements restart in the UK as FMD (foot and mouth disease) appears to be contained

While there appears to be a third case of foot and mouth disease in the latest UK outbreak, it is adjacent to an existing infected unit within the Surrey surveillance zone, so there is no evidence of the further spread of the virus within the UK. Meanwhile, the financial cost of the movement ban is mounting, with the cancellation of the UK's annual Dairy Event, which is expected to attract 10,000 farmers, and the postponement of the important lamb sales where upland animals are sold to lowland farmers for breeding or finishing.
