US Department of Agriculture reports success of prion-free cattle

The US has released initial positive data showing that cattle can be genetically modified to not produce prions, which could cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy, without any adverse effects to the animals. Prions are proteins that animals produce naturally but their function is uncertain. BSE is thought to be caused by damaged prions that clump together and destroy brain tissue.
