PEOPLE - Dieter Luetticken Award:

Intervet (Boxmeer, the Netherlands) has granted its annual Dieter Luetticken Award to Dr Mark Stevens of the UK's Institute for Animal Health. The Euro 20,000 award is given each year to encourage research into alternatives to animal testing. Dr Stevens was chosen for his work on animal models to study the pathogenesis of enteric bacterial infections of livestock and the uses of novel genetic methods to investigate the molecular basis of bacterial virulence. Of particular relevance was Dr Stevens' role in developing in vitro organ culture models to quantify bacterial adherence to tissue tropism ex vivo, said Intervet. The award is to be presented in August at the 6th World Congress on Alternatives & Animal Use in the Life Sciences in Tokyo, Japan. max.thomas@informa.com
