Indical takes in-lab diagnostics experience to the 'point-of-need' with new ASF test
German biotechnology company Indical Bioscience is increasing its presence in the point-of-need (PON) testing space.
Established in 1996, Indical (formerly Qiagen's veterinary business) is a provider of molecular diagnostic workflows in the veterinary sector and has traditionally focused on in-lab testing technology.
Indical is now also applying its expertise to PON testing workflows, said Selina Helenius – leader of the company's PON business development.
While many veterinary testing solutions claim to be PON, Ms Helenius told Animal Pharm these are often cumbersome to use. Such products are also not truly portable and require a high level of technical expertise, as well as a sterile benchtop and centrifuge.
The ideal PON diagnostics for animal health "should demonstrate performance on a par with a laboratory", according to Ms Helenius – speaking to Animal Pharm at the recent Animal Health Innovation Asia forum in Tokyo. She said PON diagnostics must be battery operated and portable, as well as enable simultaneous processing of multiple samples.
Earlier this year, Indical boosted its PON capabilities by partnering with US firm Biomeme. The deal allowed the company to adopt Biomeme's molecular PON testing technology for the animal health and food safety sectors.
Leipzig-based Indical is now launching an African swine fever (ASF) virus PCR PON test, enabling sensitive and highly specific detection for this devastating pathogen.
Ms Helenius said: "Test results are available in 50 minutes, which is a faster turnaround than with in-lab diagnostics."
She also noted Indical's portable PON testing solution enables veterinarians, government agencies and the food industry to make informed decisions sooner, particularly in light of the current ASF crisis sweeping Asia and parts of Europe.
